Lead time is the question that decides whether a specialty fabrication package survives the schedule review. For robotic 3D printed architectural work, the honest answer is that the printing itself is the fastest phase — the schedule is set by geometry approval, engineering, testing and finishing. Here's what to plan for.

The realistic ranges

Signature interior feature (reception wall, sculpted column, bar back): 6 to 14 weeks from approved geometry to installed piece.

Exterior façade package (engineered, tested, installed): 16 to 28 weeks, depending on panel count and testing scope.

Custom furniture (bespoke commission or edition piece): 4 to 10 weeks per piece.

Public art commission (with engineering and permitting): 20 to 36 weeks from artist concept sign-off.

Rollout program (multi-door retail or multi-key hospitality): sequenced against the construction schedule from a signed-off prototype.

Where the time actually goes

Geometry approval: often 30 to 50 percent of the calendar. Sample review, colour development and coordination with the architect of record are the bottleneck, not the print.

Engineering: two to four weeks for the structural engineer of record to close the analysis with the fabricator's print data as input.

Testing: exterior packages carry fire, weathering and freeze-thaw testing that can add two to six weeks against the calendar. These are done to project spec once per material family and are amortized across the panel count.

Printing: usually two to six weeks depending on quantity and cell availability.

Finishing: one to three weeks depending on finish grade — as-printed is fastest, sprayed automotive-grade is slowest.

Install: typically single-shift or single-week — the printed piece arrives crated and hangs on a pre-installed sub-structure.

What compresses the schedule

Early fabricator engagement: bringing the fabricator in during design development rather than at construction documents removes weeks of iteration later.

Physical sample early: colour and finish committed on a physical sample early stops the calendar bleeding on approvals.

Prototype approval for rollouts: one hero piece approved as the reference collapses the review loop for every subsequent door.

Concurrent testing: fire and weathering tests run in parallel with the first production print, not sequentially after.

What blows the schedule

Late geometry changes: any change after production has spun up resets weeks.

Colour and finish approval by email: physical samples exist for a reason — screen approvals get rejected on site.

Testing scope discovered late: fire testing added at construction documents rather than schematic design adds four to six weeks.

Split scope with unclear boundaries: if the printed element ties into a structural or waterproofing system owned by another trade, the coordination gap eats weeks.

Common questions

Can a signature feature be delivered in under six weeks?
Occasionally — for a repeat geometry, a client with fast sign-off and an as-printed finish. Six weeks is the practical floor for a first-of-its-kind piece with full engineering.
Does the lead time include design?
The ranges above are from approved geometry. Design development runs in parallel and typically adds four to twelve weeks depending on complexity.
How does capacity affect lead time?
Cell availability is real — a fabricator running at capacity may quote longer print windows. Booking a slot at design development rather than at production start protects the schedule.
